City of Breezy Point Donates Portable Defibrillator Units to Let’s Go Fishing Program
The City of Breezy Point recently donated two portable Automated External Defibrillator units to the Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter of Let’s Go Fishing for emergency use on their 28-foot Crestliner pontoon. The AEDs were presented to Let’s Go Fishing volunteers by Breezy Point Police Chief Kevin Merschman, between morning and afternoon fishing trips departing from Lum Park on Rice Lake in Brainerd. During 2011, Let’s Go Fishing will take approximately 1,200 Brainerd area seniors, veterans and kids fishing for free on Rice, Bay and Gull Lakes, with possible expansion to additional waters in 2012. For more information on the non-profit, volunteer-based Let’s Go Fishing program, call 218/454-FISH(3474). |
We are kicking off our 2011 season!
Congratulations to everyone who volunteered, sponsored, contributed to, or went fishing during the 2010 inaugural season of our Let’s Go Fishing Brainerd Area Chapter. With nearly 800 seniors on board enjoying free fishing trips or cruises in our first year of operation, we more than met all projections and expectations. And testament to the fact that we did a whole lot of things correctly, right from the start.
They say that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link; and judging by the results, every link—essentially every person--in our chapter performed at the highest possible level. From fundraising to promotion, to volunteer training, coordination and scheduling; and from pontoon and equipment maintenance to booking and executing senior trips, we did a masterful job. And we caught a lot of fish and triggered a wealth of smiles along the way.
We’d particularly like to acknowledge the generosity of our sponsors and contributors, and the unselfish donations of time and experience displayed by our captains and co-captains, who put their reputations for fishing prowess, navigation and customer relations on the line, every time out. The avalanche of positive comments and sincere appreciation we received from our guests warmed our hearts as well as theirs.
And to our future guests…we look forward to having you on board this season. Keep your eye on our chapter web site for future developments, details and dates of operation. Before you know it, we’ll have tight lines in the water again, and smiles galore.

Here is a little bit about the organization. Let’s Go Fishing is a non-profit organization (incorporated in Minnesota as a 501 c-3) founded in Willmar, MN in 2002. Our major objective is to provide community Seniors 55 and older with fishing and boating excursions at NO COST. The mission of Let’s Go Fishing is to give back to Seniors some small token of appreciation for all they have done to build the community we so often take for granted. We want to provide Seniors with an opportunity to spend quality time on Brainerd Area lakes, with friends, families, and acquaintances that will create memories that will last a lifetime - for the Seniors and for all the volunteers.
The Let ’s Go Fishing program is for all Seniors, as well as veterans and an intergenerational youth program is in the works. Our pontoon has been designed to accommodate Seniors by having higher rails, captain’s chairs, and wider door access to accommodate wheelchairs. We provide everything necessary for a fishing, or boating tour, including rods, reels, bait, life preservers, and water. The only thing you need if you want to fish, is a Minnesota Fishing License where required.
